JAZZ TROMBONE DUETS! New Book "Get to It!" 10 Duets for Improvisation for 2 Trombones by Nick Finzer

An important part of teaching for me is to just PLAY with my students. We play duets, we play tunes, we sight-read, all different kinds of things. A few years ago, I realized that there is almost an unlimited supply of duets in the "classical" realm - from many different composers, but for jazz, there was almost none! A few books here and there, and some classic 2 trombone plus rhythm section arrangements.

But I thought, what about just for TWO OF US? And thus, the impetus for "GET TO IT" was born... 10 jazz trombone duets that feature improvisation. It's not just blowing over tunes, it is specific improvisational tasks that will develop an improviser's awareness for both the harmony, as well as the overall musical product.

New Book! GET SET - 22 Jazz Etudes to Study Improvisation

Greetings all!

I’m super excited to launch my brand new book - GET SET!

The etudes in this book are based on some of the most frequently played forms as part of the “jazz canon.” Songbook forms as well as typical forms like the 12 Bar Blues, and 32 bar “I Got Rhythm” changes.

The two types of etudes serve two purposes. First, the Voice Leading etudes serve to teach the student how to smoothly connect chord changes in a linear (horizontal) fashion. These etudes are inspired by the work of baroque era composers like JS Bach and his Cello Suites. The single note instrument has the opportunity to denote the harmony just as clearly as a chordal instrument, all while keeping forward musical momentum.

After a student masters the written Voice Leading Etude, it is then THEIR turn to IMPROVISE a similar etude of their own, using the chord changes as indicated. Use the etude as your inspiration, but explore other possibilities that you will uncover in your own practice.

The next section of the book tackles “jazz language” through 11 settings on the same standards (and also in the same order) that deal with a range of typical bebop and idiomatic jazz language. The two sets of etudes are designed to complement one another. Studying both simultaneously will allow for a deeper understanding to the harmonic underpinnings to each set of chord changes.

These should always be learned at a slow tempo and moved faster only after mastery at that slow tempo! Always be sure to keep in mind your trombone fundamentals while playing any Etude!

Happy Practicing!

- Nick Finzer

Building Brand in Jazz...

Building Brand in Jazz...

Today I'm sharing some clips from a talk I gave about building and creating a brand as a jazz musician. Sometimes it seems like a mystery how we do this, and that it somehow "cheapens" or music. But we're always making choices (or not making choices - which is still a choice!)

Hear & Now He Sings Now He Sobs

Hear & Now He Sings Now He Sobs

The newest project from my band Hear & Now!

Steps | What Was

50 years ago this month (December 2018), one of the most iconic exploratory jazz piano trio albums hit the scene. Chick Corea's album "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs" featuring his trio of Miroslov Vitous and Roy Haynes was released in December of 1968 and highlighted a plethora of interesting releases that were released in that year. Chick was just 26 years of age in this recording, and it truly is a remarkable work of art.

For me, this album is and was one of the most intriguing musical statements that seamlessly connects improvisation and composition together, blurring the lines between what is and is not, composed. It has followed me throughout my career, popping up in bits and pieces, from a fascination as an undergraduate, to playing "Matrix" on a Juilliard degree recital. During this latest encounter, earlier in 2018, I realized this year marked the albums fiftieth anniversary!

Earlier this year, my band Hear & Now recorded brand new arrangements of the tunes from Herbie Hancock's "Speak Like a Child" album, a special project for YouTube. And when I learned both "Speak Like a Child" and "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs"  were released in the same year, it seemed fitting for me to delve deeper into this music and present new versions of Chick's tunes as well!

I'm very excited to share these new videos that feature:

Lucas Pino - Tenor Saxophone & Bass Clarinet

Alex Wintz - Guitar

Miki Yamanaka - Piano

Dave Baron - Bass

Jimmy Macbride - Drums

I hope these videos will serve has an inspiration for you to rediscover Chick Corea's original work, and to appreciate the fact that the sign of truly great composition is their longevity and ability to be reinterpreted again and again.

Please enjoy,

Nick Finzer
